lessons from the pants part I

My favourite Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants quotes:

She was sad that people like Bee and Kostos, who had lost everything, were still open to love, and she, who'd lost nothing, was not."
- Lena

The first time I read it, and every time after that, I get an impression of unfathomable sadness in this sentence.

It is despair, in the human race and at myself, at how isolated we are, too ungrateful and selfish to give our love to others. And despair too, that the only medicine that can cure us, make us whole again, is a tragedy which rips us apart.
